What can it do?

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is the preferred method for the photofacial, a non-abrasive and less-invasive rejuvenation of your skin using the remarkable IPL technology. It also works great for age spots, dyschromia, uneven pigment, rosacea, redness, capillaries, hair removal, and wrinkles. IPL emits a non-coherent, broad-spectrum light. IPL Photofacials can improve the signs of sun damage, rosacea and brown spots on the face, hands, chest, and body. It has also been used to reduce the appearance of mild acne scars and fine lines around the eyes and mouth. Usually 4-6 treatment sessions lasting about 15-20 minutes each will provide you with long lasting beautiful results. There is little recuperation time, typically you can return to work or resume your normal activities on the same day. You will notice a gradual, natural-looking improvement in your skin with time. IPL is a safe solution tailor-made to your skin type and condition and thus requires a consult to scheduled treatments.

Does Laser Treatment Hurt?

We ensure the least amount of discomfort during your procedure with cooling gel and a SapphireCool tip. We may begin treatment with a numbing agent. Many patients compare the sensation to that of a thin rubber band or pinching sensation. Generally patients find treatments very tolerable.

Who does the treatments?

All IPL treatments are preformed experienced medical professionals. Our nurse practitioner, Shelley Velickoff, ARNP, provides most of the treatments under the supervision of a board certified dermatologist. Many laser centers you laser tech or registered nurses to perform these complex procedures. Also unlike other laser centers we provide a personalized approach based on your skin and will make sure your treatments are safe and effective.

How often can treatments be done?

For most patients, 4-6 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart are recommended for the most significant results.

What are the side effects?

A small amount of flushing, or redness will follow the treatment and generally lasts from 30 minutes to several hours, but in some cases may last a few days. The brown spots and uneven pigmentation will become slightly raised and darker over the next 3-5 days. The pigment will “slough off” within 7-10 days post treatment. Blisters can occur, but are uncommon. Smoother, softer skin and improvement in uneven pigmentation can be expected within weeks.

How much does it cost?

Prices vary by locations and size of area to be treated. The range is $150-$600 per session. Usually 4-6 sessions are needed, one exception to this is brown spots which often require fewer treatment sessions.

Age Spots/Uneven Pigmentation

Also called liver spots and solar lentigines — are flat, brown or black spots. They vary in size and usually appear on the face, hands, shoulders and arms — areas most exposed to the sun. Though age spots are very common in adults older than age 40, they can affect younger people as well. IPL treatment is generally very effective at removing age, liver, sun or brown spots on the skin. It is the treatment of choice for these spots. In fact significant response may be seen in as little as two sessions, but do allow for up to six treatments. In general we find that laser removal of age spots is long lasting but not permanent, people do sometimes see new spots appear as they go back out into the sun. Often we recommend some of our products before, during or after your treatments to promote or maintain results. These are new spots are usual forming as a result of sun exposure, not a recurrence of the old, removed spots. Good sun-avoidance is key if you wish to see your skin free of sun spots. We recommend strict sunscreen and hat usage to maintain your results.

Redness/Rosacea/Capillaries

IPL treats multiple skin conditions because it works at multiple wavelengths which target blood vessels. That means that while the IPL is treating age spots it will also reach those broken capillaries we see on our nose, cheeks and other areas. IPL does not treat or remove the deeper feeder vessels, instead the IPL will reach the red blood cells in the superficial blood vessels. The blood vessels can appear again and we recommend returning for repeat treatment as needed in order to keep the desired results.

Wrinkles

IPL can cause an improvement in the fine lines and wrinkles. Although some improvement can be seen we generally recommend neuromodulators like Botox or Dysport in combination with fillers such as Restalyne and Juvederm, as well as a series of chemical peels. As you grow older, your skin gets thinner, drier and less elastic. And it becomes less able to protect itself from damage. As a result, wrinkles, lines and creases form in your skin. Although genetics are the most important determiner of skin texture, a major contributor to wrinkles is spending too much time in the sun. Smoking also can cause premature aging of your skin. Because IPL is helping to create new collagen, once results have been achieved you can expect them to be subtle but long lasting. We always recommend an SPF of 30 to be worn daily.

Hair Removal

Generally we use the diode laser for hair removal, however people with light skin and dark hair may be ideal candidates for IPL hair removal. The decision of which device to use will be made at your consult. Patients can expect a 75 to 80% decrease in overall hair in areas treated. For best results patients will need to come in every 6-8 weeks. This is due to natural hair growth. Hair growth happens in cycles and treatment needs to occur while the hair is actively growing to be most effective.
